There are times when a store bought cake topper gets the job done, but for all the times you want something super custom, it’s so helpful to know how to make your own. These sprinkle letter toppers are my go-to for creating celebratory cake toppers that spell out anything. Not only are they extra cute, they are so quick to whip up with a handful of things you probably already have on-hand (especially if you’re a sprinkle hoarder like me).

diy sprinkle letter toppers

This technique you’ll be using for these sprinkle letters also works for shapes and number cake toppers, so feel free to let your imagination run wild! The main things you’ll need are Candy Melts (tempered chocolate works just as well), some pretty sprinkles, and toothpicks to turn the letters into cake toppers. I used a template that I printed out to make sure each letter was the same size and font. You could print out a template with any font you want or wing it when you pipe out your letters – the sprinkles tend to cover up any imperfections, making this technique pretty fail proof regardless.

Here’s a quick video to show you how to make these sprinkle letters before I walk you through the steps below.

If you love creative cake tutorials like this one, be sure to check out my YouTube channel! I’ve got a growing collection of recipes, decorating tutorials, and Cake Basics over there. Hit the subscribe button on my page so you never miss a new video.

You Will Need:

Step 1: Print the Letter Template

To create my template, I simply typed out the word “YAY” in a word document and experimented with fonts until I found one I loved (it’s called Bebas Neue). It took a few prints to figure out what size I wanted the letters to be, and that will vary depending on how long your word is or how tall you want the letters to end up. Once you get them the size and font you want, print the template and cut out the individual.

how to make your own sprinkle letter toppers

If you want to replicate these exact YAY sprinkle letter toppers, here’s the template I created.

Step 2: Pipe the Letters

Melt the Candy Melts according to the package instructions. Alternatively, you can use tempered white chocolate or Ghirardelli Melting Wafers that don’t require tempering (but taste amazing!).

Wilton Candy Melts

Once melted, place the Candy Melts into a piping bag fitted with Wilton Tip 3. Cut out some pieces of wax paper and place them over each individual letter, then pipe each letter onto the wax paper pieces using the template beneath as your guide.

Step 3: Sprinkle the Letters

Working quickly so that the Candy Melts don’t set before this step, drop pinches of sprinkles onto the letters, then press them in gently so that the entire surface of each letter is covered with sprinkles. It’s important to use a light touch with this part because you don’t want the Candy Melts to spread and warp your letters.

sprinkle letters cake toppers

Let the sprinkled letters set up for about 20 minutes at room temperature or 10 minutes in the refrigerator. Afterwards, shake the excess sprinkles off of the letters to reveal the pretty toppers beneath.

diy sprinkle letters tutorial

Step 4: Add the Toothpicks

Place the remaining Candy Melts (you may need to re-melt them by now) into a piping bag and snip off about ⅛ to ¼ inch opening on the end. Turn the sprinkle letters face down so that the backs are facing upward, then pipe a line of Candy Melts onto the back of each one. Add a toothpick onto the line and cover it with more melted Candy Melts.

how to make a cake topper

Let the toothpicks set firm for another 20 minutes at room temperature or 10 minutes in the refrigerator. Once your sprinkle letters are beautifully set and functional, you can place them on top of the cake.

Even though Easter isn’t all about colorful eggs, they became such an iconic symbol of the holiday. So much that when Wilton asked me to create a cake project for their Easter campaign, eggs were the first thing to come to mind! Imagine my delight when I browsed through Wilton’s online shop and found the perfect silicone mold to make these Easter egg cake toppers. With a little painterly inspiration, some colorful Candy Melts, and a little cake pop filling, these cake toppers are so festive and fun to make!

Aren’t they pretty? The cool thing about these Easter egg cake toppers is they’re 100% edible. You basically create a Candy Melt “shell,” let it set, add the filling of your choice, and seal it with another layer of Candy Melt. After a quick trip to the refrigerator, they pop right out of the mold looking all beautiful and flawless! The mold is made of silicone for super easy release, so they literally do just pop right out. Love it!

My favorite thing about these Easter egg cake toppers is no two are alike. The process all starts by creating the colorful “shell” on the outside of the egg and you can get as creative as you want with decorating it. I ended up using Candy Melts to splatter paint and brushstroke the mold before pouring a solid color over it to create my shells. This technique made for a really seamless look, but you can feel free to be as creative as you want with your toppers. Save the splatter painting and brush stroking for the end to get a more textured look, swirl your Candy Melt Colors, or do whatever else you’re imagining!

Once the eggs were made, I placed them on top of a yellow cake and piped more Easter-inspired colors all around them in a variety of textures. All of this gorgeous piping was made possible with just three of my favorite Wilton Tips: 1M (for the rosettes), 4B (for the stars), and 233 (for the dots of colorful grass). I paired these piping tips with six different buttercream colors and just piped away until I was satisfied. The textures are such a great match for these pretty Easter eggs!

Here’s a quick video of the techniques I used to create these colorful Easter egg cake toppers, plus some footage of how I decorated the rest of the cake:

You Will Need

Step 1: Melt and Tint the Candy Melts

Melt the Candy Melts according to the package instructions, then add them to six separate bowls. Color the first three bowls using colors specifically made for Candy Melts (I used this Primary Colors Set and custom mixed the shades shown below). You’ll want to make these first three colors bold and vibrant, since they’ll be the colors of the “paint” on the outside of the shells. Candy Melts do come in all sorts of colors, so feel free to use pre-colored ones for this part if you want!

how to color candy melts

Use a little bit of the bold colors to tint the remaining three bowls and create pastel versions. These colors will be used as the shell behind the paint splatters and brushstrokes (we’ll get to those next!).

If at any point your Candy Melts seem too thick, try adding some EZ Thin Dipping Aid or heat in the microwave for an additional few seconds.

Step 2: Paint the Easter Egg Mold

Using the paint brush set, splatter paint and brushstroke the cavities of the Egg Shaped Silicone Mold with the bold Candy Melt colors until you love the look.

Let the painted mold set up at room temperature for 2-3 minutes before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Create the Easter Egg Shells

Fill each cavity in the Egg shaped mold with the pastel Candy Melts, right over the top of the painted designs. Gently tap the mold on a flat surface to make sure the entire cavity is covered evenly and let sit for about 3 minutes, or until a hard shell starts to form on the edges only.

Turn the mold over and pour out the excess Candy Melts onto a piece of wax paper.

Then, take an angled spatula and swipe over the top of the mold to remove any excess Candy Melts.

Wilton silicone easter egg mold

Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes to let the shells firm up.

Step 4: Add the Filling

Using the filling of your choice (I used cake pop filling for these), fill each cavity about ⅔ full. Be sure to leave enough room for more Candy Melt on top.

Easter egg cake pops tutorial

If your filling requires setting (most do), place the mold back into the refrigerator until your filling is nice and set.

Step 5: Add More Candy Melts

Once the filling is set, add more of the melted pastel Candy Melts to the top (aka the back) of each egg.

how to make easter egg cake pops

Swipe off the excess with an angled spatula and place back into the refrigerator to set for at least 10 minutes.

Step 6: Release

When your eggs are set, they’re so easy to remove from the silicone mold. They pop right out, and just look at how incredible the painterly designs show up!

You can serve these edible Easter eggs as a dessert all on their own, use them in your next Easter cake design, or add them to any of your bakes for a festive pop of color. Can’t wait for you guys to try this technique. And be sure to check out Wilton’s online shop for some super fun Easter themed baking supplies!

Knowing how to make number cake toppers is a skill that has come in handy over and over again. They’re so essential for birthday cakes and important anniversaries, and I even recently whipped them up to ring in 2020 (Happy New Year, by the way)! They only take about 20 minutes from start to finish, which is totally ideal for those times you need a last minute cake topper that looks super professional and fun. They’re pretty much guaranteed to add a little more joy to your cakes!

sprinkled number cake toppers tutorial

I used Wilton Candy Melts as the foundation for these colorful number cake toppers, but you could also use any tempered chocolate as a base and the process would be the same. The best part is that you can use this tutorial to create numbers (or letters) in any font you want! Just print out your favorite numerical look onto printer paper, lay a piece of wax paper over the top, and pipe the Candy Melts or chocolate on top. Cover with your favorite sprinkles and you’re good to go!

Here’s a quick video I whipped up to show you how to make these sprinkled-covered numbers in just a few easy steps. Give it a watch before you read all about how to make them below:

If you have yet to check out my YouTube Channel, go give it a look! There are tons of video tutorials to help you learn, and I’m working on adding more recipes to the mix. Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss a thing!

You Will Need:

Step 1: Pipe the Number with Candy Melts

Melt the Wilton Candy Melts according to the package instructions, then place them into a piping bag and snip off a small (about ⅛ inch) opening.

Place your printed number template (face up) onto a flat surface and cover it with a sheet of wax paper. Then, pipe the outline of your number with the melted Candy Melts and fill in the center.

Step 2: Cover with Your Favorite Sprinkles

While the Candy Melts are still wet, generously add the sprinkles to cover the entire surface, gently pressing them into the number without spreading the Candy Melts outside of the lines.

When the surface is perfectly sprinkled, place the number into the refrigerator and let it set up for about 10 minutes.

Step 3: Turn it Into a Cake Topper

After the sprinkled number is set, remove it from the wax paper backing and place it face down. Place a bamboo skewer onto the back and cover it with more melted Candy Melts.

Return the sprinkle number (with the bamboo skewer attached) to the refrigerator and allow it to set up for 10 more minutes.

And there you have it, a fun and festive sprinkled number topper:

These sprinkled number cake toppers are so perfect for topping cakes and totally edible (minus the skewer, of course). And you can even use these same steps to create letter cake toppers in any font you want! Definitely a skill you’re gonna want to have in your back pocket for any cake that needs a custom cake topper like these. Happy cake topper making, people!

I recently had the opportunity to create this bee-themed cake for Thistle & Lace, and as I was during the design planning process I knew I had to incorporate honeycomb in some way. The black and yellow buttercream stripes were a given, but adding the texture of honeycomb really made the cake come alive. There’s a really quick way to make DIY “honeycomb” for cake decorating, and I want to share the technique with you in this super quick tutorial (especially if you’re planning a bee-themed cake of your own!).

bee cake tutorial

The best thing about this technique is that it’s super fast and only requires a few materials. I used Wilton Candy Melts to get that rich yellow color, but the process will work with any sort of chocolate you want. Whatever you’re using, follow the steps below for honeycomb perfection.

Watch this quick video (above) of the process to show you how it works before you read all about it below. If you’re into cake decorating videos like these, be sure to follow along on my YouTube channel – there are tons of videos there to inspire you!

You Will Need:

Step 1: Melt The Candy Melts

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the Candy Melts according to the instructions on the package and stir until uniform in consistency.

melting wilton candy melts

If you’re using white chocolate chips (or any other kind of chocolate), follow Step 1 of this tutorial to get perfectly tempered chocolate.

Step 2: Spread onto Bubble Wrap

Place a piece of bubble wrap onto a sheet of wax paper, bubbles side up. Then, spread a layer of melted Candy Melts over the top of it using a small icing spatula.

honeycomb cake decorations tutorial

When the surface of your bubble wrap is covered, place it in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to let it firm up.

Step 3: Release

Once the Candy Melts are nice and firm, remove the bubble wrap. It should release nice and easy.

From here, you can break up the piece of “honeycomb” into smaller pieces for placing on your cake.

If you end up making some honeycomb for your next bee-themed cake (or otherwise!) be sure to let me know how it went in the comments below! And you can always tag @sugarandsparrowco on Instagram so I can see your creations. Happy honeycomb making, friends!

I’m really dazzled by geodes (who isn’t?!) and have been dying to make some sort of geode-inspired edible creation for quite some time now. So when JOANN sent me these Sweet Tooth Fairy Rock Candies in the prettiest jewel-toned colors, I considered it the perfect opportunity to bring my creative vision to life! After some experimentation, I found an easy way to whip up these tasty mini geode cupcake toppers and I couldn’t be more happy with how they turned out. Just look at these gorgeous little toppers:

geode cupcakes by Sugar & Sparrow

Are you dazzled? I am. The coolest thing is that these geodes are 100% edible and incredibly easy to make! They’re made of Wilton Candy Melts, tasty rock candy, and some sugar sprinkles to tie the look together – all things you can find at your local JOANN or from their website. And did I mention that they only take about ten minutes from start to finish? It’s the perfect project for any skill level and the results are phenomenal.

geode cupcakes topper tutorial

To make these geodes in mini-form, I used some plastic paint palettes as a mold. The cavities are the perfect size for making mini cupcake toppers, but if you’re wanting larger geodes, you can use any size half-sphere mold and follow the steps below to get the same results.

how to make edible geodes for cupcakes

If you’re more of a visual learner, here’s a quick video of how to create these mini geodes from start to finish:

You Will Need:

Step 1: Melt The Candy Melts

Following the instructions on the package, melt the ¾ of the Candy Melts in the microwave until they’re uniform in consistency.

Wilton candy melts

You’ll want to reserve about ¼ of the Candy Melts for Step 5.

Step 2: Fill The Molds

Using a spoon, fill each cavity of the plastic paint palette with Candy Melts about halfway full.

candy melts in mold

Then, slowly rotate the paint palette to ensure the sides of each cavity are covered.

Step 3: Place The Rock Candies and Sugar Sprinkles

Place a few rock candies in the center of each cavity and press them in so that they stick into the Candy melts.

mini geode tutorial

Next, place a lighter color of sugar sprinkles on top of the rock candies to fill in the gaps, making sure you leave enough room for a white sprinkled edge.

geode cupcake toppers

Finally, place the white sugar sprinkles around the edge of each geode.

geode cake tutorial

You’ve now got a multi-dimensional look, just like a real geode!

Step 4: Refrigerate

Place the entire paint palette in the refrigerator so your geodes can firm up. The geodes will be firm enough for releasing from the paint palette after just five minutes in the refrigerator.

how to make geodes

When five minutes is up, gently release the geodes from the paint palette just like you would release ice cubes from an ice tray. They should be pretty sturdy and release easily from the molds.

Step 5: Create The Sprinkled Edges

Melt the additional ¼ of the Candy Melts in the microwave according to the package instructions. Pour the gold Wilton Pearlized Sprinkles onto a small plate. One by one, carefully dip the edges of each geode into the melted Candy Melts, then roll the edges in the gold sprinkles. Set the finished geodes onto wax paper and let them set up at room temperature for ten minutes before adding them to your cupcakes.

And there you have it – the most stunning mini geodes for topping your cupcakes, made completely with products you can find at JOANN! I’m always so impressed with their collection of Wilton products, cake pans, decorating tools, and all the things. I’ve been an admirer of cakes topped with colorful chocolate sails for years, but it wasn’t until just recently that I tried my hand at making my own! I’m so excited to share this tutorial with you, because it could not be easier to do with the right materials. Mainly, some colorful Wilton Candy Melts I found at my local JOANN store. There are so many colors to choose from, you’ll find a color (or combination of colors!) for every look.

Wilton Candy Melts
marbled chocolate sail tutorial

The best things about using Candy Melts for creating sails is there’s no tempering necessary and the colors are already so vibrant. While they have the look and consistency of chocolate, Candy Melts aren’t a true chocolate and are designed in such a way that they can be melted down without having to worry about tempering. And with such a wide range of colors, you never have to worry about adding food coloring. In the past, I’ve had problems with white chocolate seizing when adding food color gel, but it’s so nice to not have to add a drop of that to Candy Melts.

chocolate sail cake by Sugar and Sparrow

It was so hard to decide what colors to choose for my sail, but in the end I decided on Royal Blue, Turquoise, and Bright White. I wanted to create a marbled effect, and these three colors paired so well together. I’m sure this chocolate sail technique will work with so many color combinations, but you could also just use one color if you don’t want the marbled look. Either way, here’s a quick video of the technique so you can see how it works before you read all about it below:

You Will Need:

  • 8 oz of Candy Melts (I used a combination of Royal Blue, Turquoise, and Bright White)
  • Bowls for and spoons for melting and mixing
  • A microwave (a double boiler will work as an alternative)
  • Parchment paper
  • Binder clips or clothespins

Step 1: Melt The Candy Melts

Divide the Candy Melts into separate bowls and microwave one at a time according to the instructions on the package: one minute on high, stir, microwave for 30-second intervals and stir after each round until fully melted. In my experience, it took two 30-second intervals (after the one minute) to fully melt the Candy Melts.

colorful candy melts by Wilton

Alternatively, there are instructions on the Candy Melts package for melting them in a double boiler if you don’t have a microwave.

Step 2: Spoon Onto Parchment Paper

Spread out a sheet of parchment paper on a moveable flat surface (like a baking sheet). Then, spoon a little bit of each Candy Melt color onto the parchment paper.

how to make marbled white chocolate

The more you add, the larger your sail will end up being, so it’s best to just eyeball how much you’re adding.

Step 3: Create The Marbled Effect

Once the Candy Melts have been added, grab the edges of the parchment paper and gently rotate it around at different angles to help it spread and marble.

how to make marbled chocolate sail

You’ll want it to be about ¼ inch thick before shaping, but you might end up with thicker areas once you shape it and that’s ok!

chocolate sail cake tutorial

You can also tap the baking sheet on a hard surface to flatten out the Candy Melts on top.

Step 4: Shape The Sail

When you’re happy with the marbled effect, use some binder clips or clothespins to crinkle and pin the parchment paper together, shaping your sail as you go. There’s no right or wrong here, and you can feel free to use things like small rolling pins and bowls to place underneath your sail to shape it.

chocolate sail cake tutorial

I didn’t really have an end shape in mind when I set out to create this Candy Melt sail, I just kindof went with the flow and kept shaping until I liked what I saw.

how to shape chocolate

Step 5: Refrigerate and Remove The Parchment

Once your Candy Melt sail is looking perfectly shaped, place it in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes, or until it’s really firm to the touch. After your sail has set in the refrigerator, carefully remove the parchment paper backing and marvel at your creation.

colorful chocolate sail

I ended up breaking the sail apart to create some added dimension before placing the sails on top of my cake, so feel free to get creative with that part. You can leave it as one sail or create a series of smaller ones. Either way, adding them to your cake is as simple and carefully placing them into the buttercream on top.

And there you have it! A beautiful cake topper made with marbled Candy Melt sails.

If you’ve got a JOANN store in your area, be sure to pop in and check out their cake decorating supply selection!
